Featured as part of the 122nd Annual Student Exhibition at PAFA, this painting was an exploration in palette building with oils, as well as a nod to one of my favorites, Jean-Michel Basquiat. The concept of transparency or having a “hollow” figure is one frequently touched on by Basquiat through many of his works.
There is something magical, haunting, and brutally honest about being able to see into, or through a work of art. I also find excitement in playing with the concepts of depth and illusions of dimension created on a flat surface. By opening up the figurative portrait here, the idea was offering the viewer more of a sense of the inner thoughts or mindset of the subject here.
I am also humbled to note that this is one of my first works sold as a student at PAFA, and I hope to delve deeper into this style of work over my time as an MFA candidate.
