Obscure Moods

An abstract oil painting on canvas with mask-like faces joined together

Featured in the 122nd Annual Student Exhibition at PAFA, this was an adventure in exploring some of my canvas preparation techniques, as well as some future ideas for printmaking.

I grew up around a lot of African art, enjoyed the weekly comics in the newspaper and spent many years in school studying languages and cultures from around the world. What has always fascinated me is how the essence of a character and personality can be captured with minimal strokes or cuts (depending on the material). Every culture had its own artistic approach you could argue, much of the knowledge and creativity shared across trade routes.

There’s something playful about conjuring “mood” by changing or simplifying a few bits of detail here and there.
