Featured as part of the 122nd Annual Student Exhibition at PAFA, I set out to explore how far I could go with my favorite color, cobalt blue. As I became more familiar with my oil paints, my early years with watercolors led me to work thinner with lots of washes and layering. 15 oz. medium-heavyweight canvas.
Breaking down the colors, literally and figuratively is an aspect of layering I enjoy quite a bit. If you talk to your paints nicely, they end up working together in harmony like a band playing some high quality jazz (you thought I was going to say the blues…didn’t you?), where you may have some tones of green and purple hinting at a different energies managing to keep in time with the current jam. The colors still work with blue! Maybe they don’t belong together, according to boring people, but we sure proved them wrong, didn’t we?
I am humbled to say this piece sold, and it is also very blue, even in warm lighting! It is one of my favorites because it is so blue. Did I mention this thing is blue yet? Because…
