Part of my art jazz band that doesn’t exist yet, The Prototypes.
Abstracted melodies. I have a thing for sound and music. When I got my first Stratocaster one of the first things I did before learning how to play anything was take it apart and put it back together.
Studying the object helps my understanding— knowing how and why the sound is produced allows for more manipulation when playing. That nerdiness and tinkering also enables one to conceptualize crafting a new instrument (perhaps!). The rules and restrictions can then be abstracted, challenged or pushed to new limits.
If a piece of wood resonates and varying aspects of tonality can be produced, you have an instrument, my friend. If you can make the sound, and you know how the instrument produces it, you find freedom. Of course, there may be ways to abstract this idea further, so that’s where I’ll be headed…
