Reading Time

A figurative oil painting on canvas of a father teaching his son to read

There are some moments in life worth capturing again.

This painting is based on a photograph from my early days on the South Side of Chicago. I grew up with a lot of love, and a ton of books. I am where I am now because of my foundations and the people that made me, and all the books. Despite all the negativity and harsh realities facing so many these days, it’s vital to remember what matters. We should also remember that scenes like this are not as rare as we are made to believe.

I have defied a lot of stereotypes in my life, and always hated being typecast or put in a proverbial box. I can say with confidence that I have only been able to be this way with the love and support of my family.

Unfortunately in recent years, I have seen many suffer to the extent that a moment like the one pictured here may not be possible. Imagine all the talent and potential that has been taken away. I think of times where a different decision or being in the “wrong place at the wrong time” could have affected me in a similar way. I consider how much energy was invested in me to try to steer me on a certain path. I am grateful.

I want others like me to be able to live long enough to experience what I have, love.

Also, you should still give your parents a hard time whenever you can, because you know they love it.
