Basil I

An oil painting on wood panel of my dog who never sits still for a potrait rendered in purple

It is difficult to sit still when you are a puppy.

Following the advice from a teacher, I experimented painting with both hands (becoming an ambipainter, if you will), alternating between the palette knife and the brush. I found this helpful in capturing the energy of my subject, who doesn’t like posing very long without treats nearby.

I tend to gravitate towards the heavier textures of canvas with my work, but there is a fun in the pliability of oil paint on incredibly smooth panel that is hard to match.
